What is EMDR Therapy?
According to EMDRIA: EMDR is an evidence-based therapy that encourages the patient to briefly focus on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation, which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories.
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation—often through guided eye movements, taps, or audio—to help the brain reprocess painful memories in a safe, structured way. This allows individuals to access and process trauma without becoming overwhelmed, reducing the emotional charge of the memory, and helping the brain store it in a healthier way.
Benefits of EMDR Therapy
EMDR is particularly effective for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and complicated grief. At Healing Solutions, we specialize in providing EMDR for:
-
Veterans and active-duty military dealing with combat trauma or service-related experiences
-
First responders (police, fire, EMTs) coping with critical incident stress and cumulative trauma
-
Children and adolescents who have experienced loss, abuse, neglect, or other early life disruptions
-
Individuals experiencing grief, whether from a recent loss or unresolved pain from the past
In addition to trauma-related concerns, EMDR has also been shown to support healing and growth in individuals facing a wide range of mental health challenges. These can include panic attacks, phobias, performance anxiety, eating disorders, dissociative disorders, and low self-esteem.

After EMDR, clients frequently report a decrease in activation associated with previous triggers as well as a decrease in negative thoughts associated with previous trauma. By helping clients process the root causes of emotional and behavioral patterns, EMDR can promote greater emotional regulation, resilience, and overall wellbeing.
